Incorporating the side-to-side motion is a great technique utilizing the thumb. I find this very helpful, very smooth, very graceful, along with a very crisp sound. Like hitting the edge. Here I am using my thumb and it's that side to side motion that allows me to utilize my thumb at the edge of the drum.
